Professional Year Program is a well structured professional development program, which combines formal training and an Australian internship placement for international students who have graduated from Australian university. It is a 12 month long program, currently available in the field of accounting, computer science and engineering.

These programs are specially designed to facilitate the international students who wish to apply for the permanent residency in Australia and to help the graduates to develop industry-specific skills by classroom training combined with real workplace exposure through internship.

Professional Year program is a 44-week long program includes a 12-week internship placement in a relevant organisation.

Course work is structured with 32-weeks of formal training to allow students to understand Australian workplace culture and practices, learn the business communication skills and 12 weeks of Australian workplace placement to helps students gain valuable Australian work experience.

Students who have completed undergraduate or postgraduate degree in accounting, computer science or engineering (or closely related area) in Australia are eligible for the Professional year program.

One must hold a temporary skilled graduate visa (485), which allows 18 month stay in Australia after the completion of the degree. The degree must be completed in last 6 months. One must be under 50 years of age.

The candidates who have completed the ENGNEERING degree outside of Australia from a recognised institution are also eligible to study Professional Year Program. They need to apply for a Skilled-Recognised Graduate Visa (subclass 476).

All applicants should have a successful skill assessment from their respective assessment bodies (ACS, EEA, CPA, IPA and ICAA). A minimum overall IELTS test score of 6.0 and not less than 6 in each band are necessary to qualify for a professional year.

  • Yes, you can get the additional 5 migration points by DIBP for applying a SKILLED DEPENDENT VISA in Australia, after successful completion of Professional Year Program.

There are generally 1 to 2 classes a week, in weekdays depending on the length of the class. Weekend classes are also available. One can choose what is convenient, as flexible choices are available.

The fee varies from provider to provider.
The basic fees are as follows:

  • For accounting, the fees is between- $ 6000 is $ 11,500
  • For engineering the fees is between -$ 15200- $ 15500
  • For IT the fees is between – $ 12600 – $ 12930

Yes, you can choose to move to take this program anywhere in Australia provides your PY provider has premises in your selected location.

No, it is not paid as it is the part of the Professional Year Program.

Yes, if you are working in the similar field; you can use your own company for your internship.

You will not be allowed to withdraw or change to any other internship. Failure to complete the approved/valid internship will result in a failure of your internship module and your graduation will be delayed.Once your internship has started, you will have to complete the internship within the agreed time limit.

If you want to arrange your internship, you should talk to your educational institution before starting the course and understand the process for it. Many business year institutions permit self-sourcing internships.

No, this does not guarantee job placement. The objective of the program is to prepare recent graduates with the necessary professional skills for career in Australia. However, the host company may grant employment opportunities to qualified candidates on the basis of performance during the internship.
